Lobley Hill Big Top Application - interview

The planning application by churches group "NE1" to install a big top for a period of ten weeks on the site of the Central Nursery at Lobley Hill, Gateshead, has sparked local debate. Some residents oppose the plan, fearing traffic congestion. Jonathan Wallace interviews Revd Bob Hopper of Lobley Hill All Saints Church who supports the plan, and Councillor Peter Maughan, who is representing residents opposing the application.

I am sure that since this concern has been brought up, that NE1 will be devoting a lot of resources to solve the parking issue. But overall, I am of the opinion that the tremendous benefit to the Gateshead community will be worth the temporary inconveniences that some of our residents may experience.

If we see a major reduction in crime in our area; if we see a sizable reduction in families breaking up and if we see greatly improved community spirit, wouldn't this be worth a little sacrifice on all of our parts for just 10 weeks? Speaking as one who lives in the affected area that will experience these traffic and parking issues, I am prepared to put up with a little inconvenience toward that goal!

Let's hope Edward Canabiss is right. If NE1 come back with another application without looking to resolve the issues we residents are concerned about, we will fight it - full stop.

I am a Dunston resident and church member. I have many local friends who
tell me how happy they have become after joining the Church family. I tell them the same!!!!!!!!!!!!
I appeal to fellow residents to put up with an hour or two of inconvenience for 10 weeks. I think that NE1 will bring years of improved community life to our villages.
